5 tips to comfort skin in winter

We all know how important it is to adjust our skin care regimen to the climate where we live and to the weather changes. Caring for skin during winter takes a little extra time and effort because of the conditions and changes that are extreme for skin. Skin gets exposed to windy, cold, and dry weather outside and humidity-depleting heaters indoors, which can further leave the skin dehydrated, itchy, red, and irritated. Even the most balanced, well cared for skin can be thrown off by winter air.

The effects of winter on the skin include:

  • Skin that looks dull and lifeless,
  • Skin that can appear dry and flaky,
  • Fine lines that become more visible,
  • Increased redness,
  • Uneven skin tone.

Combat dry winter skin with these tips for retaining your skin's natural moisture and comfort.

TIP 1: EXFOLIATE

Our skin normally sheds dead cells every 28 days; however, as we age this cell turnover rate slows down. Factors such as lack of moisture, sun exposure and dry skin can cause a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Exfoliation is essential during winter, as it helps eliminate dead skin cells that clog pores and inhibit respiration, allowing your skin to better absorb the subsequently applied creams and concentrates. We recommended incorporating this step one to four times a week, depending on the exfoliant, because if done too often, it may over-exfoliate and irritate the skin.

TIP 2: MOISTURIZE

Increased time exposed to indoor heating and the colder climate outside diminishes the moisture content from skin as well as lipids from the skin. Moisturizing is crucial, to replenish both the water and lipid moisture the skin requires. The products used in the summer on the majority of individuals may not be sufficient in winter. Therefore, opt for a thicker texture, and apply a serum or concentrate before moisturizing.

TIP 3: MASK

Masks deliver a surge of ingredients to the skin making this step even more essential in the winter. They envelop the epidermis, delivering ingredients for all skin types and conditions, leaving the skin feeling restored and appearing bright and luminous.

TIP 4: PROTECT HANDS AND LIPS

Chapped lips and dry, cracked skin on the hands can be avoided in winter, given the proper protection and treatment.

During winter, a hand cream should be applied after each time the hands are in water, washed or after a hand sanitizer has been applied, to restore moisture and protect the skin.

In the case of extremely dry, chapped hands, a daily exfoliation is also beneficial. At least once per day, exfoliate the hands with Sweet Gommage to remove dead skin cells, and follow by the application of Soft Hand Cream.

Chapped lips accumulate dead cells on the surface, which need to be eliminated to allow the lipids in the treatment/protecting product to penetrate. Repair Lip Balm’s exfoliating tip will save your lips this winter. Simply apply a thin layer of Repair Lip Balm to the lips, then gently massage the lips with the exfoliating tip. This unique tip can also be used without product application. After the exfoliation, you could wipe the lips to remove the dead cells that have been released and apply another thin layer of Repair Lip Balm to the lips. This will remove the dead cells, to allow the ingredients in the lip balm to treat and protect the lips from winter chapping.

TIP 5: USE SUN PROTECTION

The sun can often be more intense in the winter than in the summer, as the sun’s rays reflect off of the snow and are redirected right onto the skin. Daily sun protection should always be part of your daily routine; however, it is especially important for those engaging in outdoor winter sports. Sun protection should be reapplied every 2 hours during outdoor activities, to ensure the skin is adequately protected.
