5 tips to comfort skin in winter

We all know how important it is to adjust our skin care regimen to the climate where we live and to the weather changes. Caring for skin during winter takes a little extra time and effort because of the conditions and changes that are extreme for skin. Skin gets exposed to windy, cold, and dry weather outside and humidity-depleting heaters indoors, which can further leave the skin dehydrated, itchy, red, and irritated. Even the most balanced, well cared for skin can be thrown off by winter air.

TIP 1: EXFOLIATE

 

 

Our skin normally sheds dead cells every 28 days; however, as we age this cell turnover rate slows down. Other factors such as lack of moisture, sun exposure and dry skin can cause a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. This build-up interferes with normal skin function, as it can minimize and even block the skin's respiration, elimination of toxins, and prohibit essential lipids from reaching the surface of the skin, which interferes with the hydro-lipdic barrier. These dead cells also block the products applied from penetrating the skin, severely reducing their action and the expected results. Exfoliation is needed to remove these dead surface cells, to allow proper cell turnover, skin functioning, and penetration of skincare products.

TIP 2: MOISTURIZE

 

 

Increased time exposed to indoor heating and the colder climate outside diminishes the moisture content from skin as well as lipids from the skin. Moisturizing is crucial, to replace both the water and lipid moisture the skin requires. Extra lipids are often required to minimize TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss) and restore the skin's hydro-lipidic barrier. This step is crucial in the winter months. The products used in the summer on the majority of individuals are not sufficient in winter, as the skin requires increased moisture and lipids.

TIP 4: PROTECT HANDS AND LIPS

TIP 5: USE SUN PROTECTION

 

 

The sun can often be more intense in the winter than in the summer, as the sun’s rays reflect off of the snow and are redirected right onto the skin. Daily sun protection should always be part of your daily routine; however, it is especially important for those engaging in outdoor winter sports. Sun Protection should be reapplied every 2 hours during outdoor activities, to ensure the skin is adequately protected.
